The goal of the Bridges program is to provide safe, high quality before and after school care in an enjoyable and enriching atmosphere with supervision by a caring staff. The Bridges program follows the Harvard Public Schools calendar of 180 days.
The Bridges Program sponsored by the Harvard Public Schools and administered by the Office of Harvard Community Education/Bridges. The before and after school care is located at the Hildreth Elementary School. The office of Community Education/Bridges is in the Bromfield House, 2nd floor, 39 Massachusetts Avenue, Harvard.
Children currently enrolled in and attending Hildreth Elementary School from kindergarten through grade five are eligible to enroll in the Bridges program. Enrollment is on a first-come, first-served basis. The Bridges Program as part of the Harvard Public Schools does not discriminate on the basis of race, national background, religion, gender, economic status, political party, age, handicap and other human differences in admission to , access to, treatment in or employment tin its programs or activities.
Children are divided for activities according to age and interest. Choices include: recreation, arts and crafts, computers, cooking, sports and games, drama, hobbies, nature and science. A quiet area is available for students wishing to do homework. An afternoon snack is provided daily. Children have access to the gymnasium and other school areas on a space available basis. Field trips and on site enrichment programs are scheduled periodically. Children occasionally take walking trips to nearby locations.
The program provides opportunities for outdoor and indoor play, arts and crafts, cooking, music, drama, hobbies, story time, sharing, games, science, nature, and computer explorations. A snack is served daily in the cafeteria at 3:15 p.m. Children participate in activities based on their interest and age appropriateness.
Bridge to Independence
(Flexible Planning for Older Children)
Recognizing that older children desire more independence, options are provided which allow them to participate in a supervised program, while at the same time, make their own decisions about use of their time. Parents are also encouraged to work with the staff to develop a flexible program that meets the needs of their child.
Children in grades 3 through 5 are encouraged to participate in before and after school activities, including SPECTRUM as well as Global Child, music lessons, chess and math clubs, chorus, soccer, etc. held at the school. We must have a note from the parent giving permission for the child to attend the activity information the staff as to times, dates and pickup.
Quiet Activities and Homework Club
A quiet area is available for any child wishing to do homework, read or rest. Parents wishing to have their child complete homework while at Bridges should notify our office through a signed student contract, and the child will be reminded and assisted as needed. A separate information sheet will be sent home giving the details or our Homework Club program.
Walking trips to nearby locations are planned on an occasional basis. Field trips requiring school bus transportation are also scheduled. Special programs by local artists and performers are held.
