An introductory course that introduces students to a Fine Arts approach in creative problem solving and design. It is the prerequisite course to all of the department’s art electives. Students will be given the opportunity to explore and to experiment with a wide variety of art mediums and materials. The basic Elements & Principles of Design will be introduced through these art experiences: Two-dimensional design, Drawing, Painting, Printmaking, and Three-dimensional design, ceramics and Jewelry.

This course is designed to provide students with basic skills in drawing and painting with an emphasis on drawing from direct observation and experimenting with a variety of drawing and painting media. The student will be introduced to contour drawing, negative space, value portraiture, figurative and still life drawing. Students in this course will be required to maintain a sketchbook. Background information in art history will be included in the course as it pertains to student projects. Museum field trips will be taken to enhance historical, cultural and aesthetic subjects studied in class.

This course refines and builds upon the drawing and painting techniques that were developed in Drawing and Painting I. Using their advanced skills, students will explore mediums such as oil paints, watercolors, and pastels. The student will explore various styles of art and develop his/her individual style. Students in this course will be required to maintain a sketchbook and a portfolio. Background information in art history will be included in the course as it pertains to student projects. Museum field trips will be taken to enhance historical, cultural and aesthetic subjects studied in class.

This course is designed for students with a strong interest in exploring three-dimensional forms. It is a concentration in all basic clay techniques, beginning with hand building (slab, coil, and pinch) and progressing to wheel thrown forms. Students learn to throw basic forms such as bowls, and cylinders. They will make various handbuilt pieces including mugs, lidded boxes, vases and other functional and non-functional pieces. Decorative clay and glaze techniques will be developed and students will learn how to stack and fire the kiln. Projects will encourage individualized solutions and personal style.

This course introduces students to the basic concepts of jewelry-making and weaving. Students will transform sheet metals into bracelets, pins, and rings while developing a variety of metalsmithing skills. Students will learn how to set stones, inlay color epoxy and form chains. Textile work will explore weaving techniques on table looms.

There will be a workshop/materials fee to cover precious metals and stones.
